BET Announces Inaugural Comedy Award Show

Get ready for a load of laughs as BET presents its first annualBET COMEDY AWARDS. The network known for its stand-upshowcase, Comicview, the longest running of its kind, has declaredSept. 28 a night of high-quality urban comedy.

To be televised live at the historic Pasadena Civic Auditorium,the BET COMEDY AWARDS will be hosted by actor, comedian and radiopersonality, Steve Harvey, and will feature routines from some oftoday’s most electrifying performers. The list of scheduledattendees includes Chris Rock, Wanda Sykes, Jamie Foxx, Kim Whitleyand BET’s own Rickey Smiley and Bruce Bruce.

“In four short years, we set a precedent with the BET AWARDS asthe most- watched awards show among African Americans, thanks tothe industry supporters who embraced it and the millions of fanswho tuned in,” said Debra Lee, BET President and Chief OperatingOfficer in a press release.

“Now we’re taking that momentum in a new direction, creating thefirst major awards ceremony dedicated to urban comedy which salutesthe incredible talent of the performers, directors and writers thatcreate it. We’re confident that the BET COMEDY AWARDS will not onlybecome another ratings winner for the network, but also set theplatinum standard among comedy awards shows.”

During the evening two special awards will be presented. TheComedy Icon Award will be presented to the Wayans family for theirachievements in television, film, and production and, BET.com’sPlatinum Mic Viewer’s Choice Award will be presented to thefeatured artist who has enjoyed the most success from theirappearance.
