Fire Breaks Out at New Store on U Street

A small fire broke out in the back of a new shop being built at the corner of U and 9th Street. Around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, about six fire trucks arrived at the scene of the fire.

Owners are building a Sweet Mango at the location and have been for about three years, said Michael R., 28, who works at the tattoo shop next to the store. He did not know if anyone was hurt.

“They were over there working and I guess they smelled smoke and called the cops,” he said of the owners.

Black paper covers the entrance of the door, so outsiders cannot see the interior.

The lane nearest the shops was blocked for about 30 minutes, but people could walk across the street.

The fire trucks cleared at about 6:50 p.m.
