Redskins Safety Murdered at Home in Miami

Four Men Charged with murder of Taylor and Burglay

Redskins safety, Sean Taylor was shot Monday, November 26 at his home in Miami, and died the next morning. Taylor was found bleeding from a bullet wound in his upper thigh, after his girlfriend called 911 at approximately 1:47 a.m. Taylor was then airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. The bullet wound punctured Taylor in his upper leg. After seven hours of intensive surgery, Sean Taylor, 24, was declared dead at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday November 27, 2007. Four men were arrested in Fort Myers, Fla. On Friday, and face burglary ad murder charges.According to Miami-Dade police, the four suspects, Charles Wardlow, Eric Rivera, Venjah Hunte, and Jason Mitchell, broke into the home with the intention of robbing the home of money, rather than killing Taylor.”They were certainly not looking to go there and kill anyone,” said Miami-Dade police director Robert Parker. “They were expecting a residence that was not occupied. So murder or shooting someone was not their initial motive.”Police are trying to see if a reported robbery on Taylor’s Miami property just a week before Taylor’s shooting, is interconnected. Sean Taylor, a graduate of the University of Miami, had an outstanding football career. Taylor was picked 5th in the 2004 NFL draft by the Washington Redskins. He was selected to the Pro Bowl after the 2006 season.”Over the last two years, I got a chance to really see him grow as a man off the field,” said Daniel Snyder, the Redskins owner, who had led a team contingent to Miami after the shooting. “Off the field, he became very, very important to me, our organization and Coach [Joe] Gibbs. . . . This is a terrible tragedy, and we’re going to miss him very, very much.”The death of Sean Taylor has not only brought his friends and family together but also the entire Redskins fan community. All players, of the Redskins will play with the number 21, which was Taylor’s number, on their helmets, while Redskin officials will be wearing patches also baring the number 21. Two candle light vigils have been held at Redskin Park, where some 200 fans came to honor their slain player. A large 21 was also painted in gold and red, on the grass outside of the Redskins stadium. The funeral will be held Monday December 3, at Pharmed Arena, on the campus of Florida International University in Miami. The funeral will be open to the public, and thousands are expected to attend.”God is always in control,” Pedro Taylor later told reporters. “We have no control of life or death … we thank Him for all 24 years of having Sean here. I know it sounds short, but that’s His will and it was done.”Sean Taylor leaves behind his one-year-old daughter Jackie, girlfriend Jackie Garcia, as well as his father Pedro Taylor. One of the NFL’s hardest hitters will truly be missed by many.
