What’s Going on in Ward 6?

Ward 6 Sees Decrease in Violent Car Jackings

In February, the Metropolitan Police Department announced it made 11 arrests in car-jacking cases on and around Capitol Hill. In February and March, the Capitol Hill area reported zero car jacking incidents, according to Ward 6 councilmember Tommy Wells’ Web site. Police continue to patrol the area and are looking for additional suspects in the remaining cases. Between March 22 and 23, Ward 6 saw 10 separate incidents of theft where stolen goods were taken from a parked car, and one case of car theft from the 400 Block of I Street N.W.

D.C. Streetcar to Reach Union Station by 2012

The D.C. Department of transportation has started designing plans for the new streetcar line set to travel from Benning Road Northeast along H Street Northeast to Union Station, according to a report in the Capitol Hill Current. Construction for the line has already begun, with crews reconstructing H Street Northeast to lay tracks and updating sidewalks to make them more pedestrian friendly, among other things according to DDOT.

Crews are reconstructing Benning Road Northeast between 14th and H Street Northeast to Oklahoma Avenue Northeast. The project also includes reconstructing portions of Maryland Avenue and Bladensburg Road. Much of the road reconstruction for the streetcar also falls under the Great Streets Initiative, which is aimed at improving public investment, public safety, economic development and strategic land use on heavily traveled roads in the District.

D.C. Department of Transportation Accepting Input on Problem Intersections

The D.C. Department of Transportation is accepting public comments on problem intersections through April 4, according to a report on Ward 6 councilmember Tommy Wells’ Web site. The intersections include 10th Street and Independence Avenue Southeast, 10th Street and Constitution Avenue Northeast, 12th Street and Independence Avenue Southeast, and 12th Street and Constitution Avenue Northeast. The DDOT plans to install four-way stop signs at the problem intersections to improve traffic safety in these Ward 6 Neighborhoods, according to the report.
