The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments on both sides of this question in Trump v. Barbara, as the president listened in the audience on Wednesday. Trump’s executive order, “Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship,” reinterprets the 14th Amendment’s citizenship clause, which grants birthright citizenship to most born in the United States. Justices will decide whether the order complies with the citizenship clause if presidential

At the center of the argument is a deceptively simple question: Who qualifies as a transportation worker engaged in interstate commerce? The answer could determine whether thousands of delivery drivers across the country can take their employers to court or be forced into private arbitration. The dispute stems from delivery drivers who transport goods from distribution centers to retail stores. They do not cross state lines themselves, but the

What began in 2016 as a policy debate over sanctuary campuses has become a lived reality, students say, one shaped by travel restrictions, visa uncertainty and the fear that a routine airport encounter could upend their education. Spring break, typically a time for travel, has taken on new meaning for many students. For some, leaving campus, or even passing through an airport,

It began with a search warrant at a suburban home in Denton County, Texas in August 2022. FBI agents executed the warrant at the Texas residence of Ali Daniel Hemani, a native-born U.S. citizen, after opening an investigation that included alleged ties to a foreign terrorist organization. Inside, agents found a Glock 9mm pistol, 60 grams of marijuana and a small amount of cocaine that Hemani

Even more critically, the Court’s decision could lay the groundwork for the emaciation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. The Court essentially revived the Texas’ controversial 2025 map, which would reshape the state’s congressional districts, by overturning a lower court’s ruling in favor of Black and Latino plaintiffs in LULAC v. Callais and Robinson v. Callais, a pair of consolidated cases that could determine whether it’s constitutional to use race to create voting districts — even though the aim of the Voting Rights Act is to ensure fair representation for minorities. The justices’ decision could significantly reshape how lower courts interpret voting practices. This is especially true for residents living in Wards 1, 5, 7 and 8 — areas that are often at the center of crime statistics. “We are scared in this community,” D.C. resident Chase Brantley said. “Seeing the National Guard in my neighborhood doesn’t make me feel safe; it makes me feel like we’re living under occupation.” A Washington Post–Schar School poll found that 80% of D.C. residents disapproved of the federal presence, and
