A man is stabbed and an arrest warrant is out for a popular hip-hop artist after a fight broke out at the taping of the Second Annual Vibe Awards in what is becoming a routine of violence at urban based award shows.
This was the scene Monday night as the drama ensued. Hip-hop artist, Snoop Dogg and Vibe Magazine founder, Quincy Jones appeared on stage to present the Vibe Legend Award. Backstage stood the honoree, producer Dr. Dre preparing to accept his award when suddenly an unidentified man came up and sucker-punched him.
Things went south from there. According to witnesses, Dre’s entourage, including bodyguards and affiliates began to bludgeoningly beat the attacker, Jimmy James Johnson. The fight moved to the audience where chairs were flying, and punches and kicks were thrown. Police eventually used pepper spray to subdue the crowd.
The Santa Monica Police Department has issued an arrest warrant for Young Buck, a rapper from 50 Cent’s G-Unit, for his involvement in the stabbing of Johnson, 26, during the melee.
At a press conference, police explained why they decided to charge Young Buck, nee Darnell Brown for the crime.
Mr. Brown is seen lunging over another male and swinging the knife at Mr. Johnson’s upper body while Johnson is looking away from him," said J.T. Butts Jr. of the Santa Monica Police Department.
"He is clearly depicted holding the knife after the assault and was part of a group of fight participants that were sprayed by pepper spray. Brown then fled the scene and was not identified until earlier this morning. … We are asking Mr. Brown to surrender himself to the Santa Monica Police Department immediately."
Other big winners that night were Usher, who won best R&B Voice of the Year, Terror Squad, and Alicia Keys, who managed two score two awards despite leaving the show early when the fighting broke out.
