Among the DC voters who headed to the polls on Election Day were residents of Columbia Heights. The Ward 1 community is known for its historic row houses and Tivoli Theatre.

On Election Day, HU NewsVision reporter Beverly Robertson said she heard one reoccurring concern from voters within the area as they headed to the polls.

DC voters have plenty to consider as they make their voices heard in ward one at the Columbia Heights Community Center representing a diverse population of residents.

“I’m just motivated to help our community and have a say in who gets to be in power in our neighborhood. This is my first time living in D.C. where we have a new mayor up for election, so it’s very exciting to see.”

“It’s been actually a really interesting process to study the candidates. And so, like you said, this is the first time that they’re electing a new mayor, and so I voted for Ms. Brown.”

I’m here at Columbia Heights Community Center this morning as DC voters hit the polls for the 2026 midterm election. the foot traffic has been steady as many are exercising their duty of civic engagement.

“I’ve been a site coordinator for about 20 years or so, and I think it’s very important for everyone to vote at every election. midterms especially. But this is, in D.C., a mayor’s election, which is one of our biggest races that we have. So, of course, I find it very important for people to vote for this one.”

Aside from the mayor, DC voters are concerned about the state of the economy, public safety with the presence with federal troops, and the country overall.

“My concern is about the whole world together. That is the security. The security of our country here. because there are very threatening things around America.”

But in order for any change one dc resident said it best.

“Voting is very important, mainly if we want to make change within our communities.”
