Bison Madness took Burr Gymnasium by storm on Monday night, signaling the commencement of Howard University’s annual homecoming. This year’s celebration, themed “Revival,” embodied the essence of Bison pride, with several nods to Howard University’s prolific past.
Burr Gymnasium had a lengthy line of enthusiastic students, all eager to secure their seats for the highly anticipated show. The event featured exclusive previews of the women’s and men’s basketball teams, alongside invigorating performances by the Showtime Marching Band, the Ooh La La! Dancers and the Bisonettes Dance Team. Bison Madness electrified the campus and set the bar high for homecoming 2023.
Amplifying the star power for the evening, actor J. Alphonse Nicholson, best known for his portrayal of Lil’ Murda in the STARZ hit series “P Valley,” assumed his role as a special guest and MC, alongside Howard alumnus DJ Jae Murphy.
Bison Madness, in collaboration with Jordan Brand, transformed Burr Gymnasium into a spirited pep rally and a thrilling basketball scrimmage, offering plenty of Howard University-themed gear. A dazzling halftime show by the Showtime Marching Band, the Ooh La La! Dancers, and the Bisonettes Dance Team added to the excitement in the building.
The energy in the building was amplified with a giveaway of Jordan Brand T-shirts and paraphernalia, which included signs, posters and sculptures, providing alumni and students a tangible and memorable experience.
The highlights of the evening were the basketball teams. First-year guard Jordan Atkins marveled at the infectious energy that charged the event, unifying student-athletes, performers and hundreds of spectators alike.
“I’m really just looking forward to the tailgate,” Atkins said. “I heard a lot about it so I am looking forward to it and meeting new people.”
As the men’s basketball team took to the court, the audience witnessed jaw-dropping dunks and impressive skills that left everyone eager for the 2023-2024 basketball season. Bison Madness officially set the stage for a season of unforgettable moments and thrilling victories.
A post by the official Howard University Instagram page, HU 1867, reflected on the intensity during Bison Madness and hopes for the upcoming basketball season. “Last night the energy was electrifying at Bison Madness! The HU community came out in full force, celebrating our legacy and looking forward to a promising season ahead.”
Following the Bison Madness event, spectators continued the fun at the after party in front of Burr Gymnasium, displaying their Bison spirit. Attendees engaged in friendly competition with corn-hole and mini basketball, forming bonds while enjoying the food trucks at the event.
“It is my first homecoming,” said Dylan Metoyer, a first-year student at Howard. “I’m interested in the vibes, just having fun and enjoying it with my friends.”
Homecoming events like Bison Madness and the after party were a true expression of the Revival concept and strengthened the sense of belonging to Howard University among students, faculty and alumni.This evening served as proof that Howard is a family that welcomes everyone in need of a place to call home, promoting a sense of unity.
Bison Madness truly set the tone for a week of celebrations; it was a lively display of physical ability, entertainment and camaraderie that revived the Bison spirit.
Other events that kicked off homecoming week included the Lavender reception on Wednesday, Oct. 18. This annual event celebrates LGBTQIA+ students, alumni, donors, allies and more, acknowledging the university’s leaps in inclusion and activism.
Thursday night was all about prestige and glamour as Howard hosted its annual student fashion show at the Cramton Auditorium. The theme for this year’s spectacle was “50 Years of Hip-Pop,” a star-studded affair with that featured the Jordan brand, celebrities and student performers.
