Headlines buzzed as Eater DC announced earlier this week that tech mogul Elon Musk was set to bid on The Line D.C., a boutique hotel in Adams Morgan.

Musk’s prospective purchase of the neighborhood hotel and café sparked heavy opposition from residents, as flyers featuring a QR code linked to a petition appeared around Adams Morgan and Columbia Heights.

The petition garnered 2,000 signatures, with supporters voicing concerns about Musk’s alleged plans to turn the property into a private social club.

Anticipation settled when the property’s lender, Acore Capital, was the sole bidder on the foreclosed property at a New York Supreme Court auction on Thursday.

Columbia Heights resident Camille Keene said she felt relieved to hear the news, as she hopes the future of The Line will remain community-oriented, like the other local businesses in the area.

“Oftentimes, local businesses are more likely to become third spaces because they have a stake in the community,” Keene said. “They’re a part of the community. They feel more inviting because they’re building community rather than just spending money.”
